BROKE BOYS
Broke Boys is nothing less than the producer duo who created the sound of contemporary German trap. Berlin producers Greeny Tortellini and AlexAnder, along with ex member Sam Salam, were inspired by American Hip Hop to found a producer group focused on trap sounds. They first made a name for themselves by producing UFO 361’s notorious first hit “Ich bin ein Berliner” in 2015. The marked success of the song propelled them into the German music scene, where they quickly became the first and foremost trap producers in the country. Inspired by new wave Atlanta producers such as Southside and Lex Luger, the keys of their sound feature 808s, triplet hi hats and heavy snares, which are now recognised as Germany’s official trap sound. Unrequested at the beginning, UFO’s success boosted the producers’ popularity, and their beats were soon requested by many rappers. Along with producing many of UFO’s hits, such as “ALLEIN”, “SCHEIß AUF EURE PARTY”, “MISTER T” and “JAMES DEAN”, they also collaborated with other big names in German rap, such as Dardan, Manuellsen and Mortel. Broke Boys do more than just producing: Greeny is himself a rapper with his own beats, and the duo is well-known for its format of events “Trap or Die”, founded in 2015. These events are extremely popular in Berlin, where popular US rappers are often invited, such as Hoodrich Pablo Juan and Juice WRLD. Broke Boys are undeniably the most important new producers in Germany, whose legacy has irreversibly changed the country’s trap sound.
